On October 16, Fr. James Martin and 11 other individuals received Sapientia et Doctrina awards from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education.  Fr. Martin spoke at the celebration about the role of humor as a sign of faith.  Fr. Martin said, “We’ve all met Catholics who seem to think that being religious means being deadly serious… But of course, when you’re deadly serious, you’re seriously dead.”  For more information about the Sapientia et Doctrina celebration, visit Fordham University’s eNewsroom.

Tom McGrathTom McGrath, Loyola Press vice president of new product development, as well as an author, speaker, and father, reviews Loyola Kids Book of Saints by Amy Welborn.

One task for parents is to inspire their children’s imaginations with the fundamental truths and values of our Catholic faith. A great way to do that is to tell the stories of those holy women and men (and children!) who embodied those truths and values in their daily lives. Seeing such virtues as charity, courage, humility, and holiness exemplified in the lives of real people helps our children imagine a future for themselves in which they, too, can be charitable, brave, appropriately humble, and holy.

Amy Welborn is the perfect person to tell these stories to our children. She recognizes that saints can seem so otherworldly that people have a hard time relating to them. In this collection of stories more than 60 stories, she portrays the saints as human and easy to relate to.

Think of all the stories our children will be told about childish rock stars and self-centered movie stars and sports stars who are anything but heroes. Wouldn’t you love to counter these by introducing your children to the interesting, inspiring, and even fun stories of ordinary people who lived extraordinary lives because of their faith? If so, then this is the book that will offer examples that will help your children (and you!) for a lifetime.
